Our Academy of Hospitality and Tourism students in Culinary I created latkes as part of a lesson on the holiday Hanukkah, using a family recipe from our own Mrs. Nease.
Latkes are traditional potato pancakes fried in oil. They are eaten during Hanukkah to symbolize the miracle of the oil that lasted eight days in the rededicated Temple in Jerusalem. Through this hands-on experience, students learned not only culinary techniques, but also the cultural and historical significance behind this holiday tradition.

A couple of weeks ago, students in our Academy of Hospitality and Tourism Event Planning class, took part in an interactive challenge called Hospitality Survivor! During our discussion on essential skills for success in the hospitality industry, one quality stood out above the rest—leadership. Our class leaders showcased their strategic thinking by carefully selecting their survivor teams.
The competition featured a unique twist: each team had just two minutes to complete a blindfolded activity, setting both an informal and formal place setting. The catch? They could only receive utensils from their teammates—no peeking or guiding hands allowed!
The energy in the room was great, and the students demonstrated teamwork, communication, and creativity under pressure. Everyone had a blast, and we celebrated some impressive class winners!

🎄🦃 We Dig the Pig at MGM! 🦃🎄
This holiday season, our amazing partners at Piggly Wiggly in Mobile delivered our turkey order for our faculty and staff!
We are so thankful for their generosity and the strong partnership we share through our culinary program. Partnerships like this make our community stronger, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Students in Mr. Sumerlin’s 11th grade U.S. History classes have been learning about resistance movements against Nazi and fascist occupations in Europe.
To help students better understand the importance of resistance, Hanukkah was used as an example of resistance from ancient times through the modern era. Hanukkah commemorates the Jewish people’s successful resistance against religious oppression over 2,000 years ago and the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. The holiday also remembers the miracle of a small amount of oil that was only expected to last one day but burned for eight days, symbolizing perseverance and hope.
A special thank you to Mrs. Nease for speaking with our students and helping them better understand the history and relevance of Hanukkah.

Students in our Academy of Agri-Science have been putting their wood shop skills to work as they learned how to safely use a circular saw, read and use a tape measure, and problem-solve through every cut and connection—all to bring our chicken house project closer to completion. From measuring twice (and sometimes three times) to making confident cuts, they’re gaining skills that go far beyond the classroom. Proud of the teamwork, focus, and growth happening one board at a time!
We are exceptionally thankful for our Advisory Committee member Mr. Randy Reed for volunteering his time to pass on his knowledge and expertise for this project!

Our PTO presented a check to Mrs. Browning today as she and her family continue to recover after losing their home in a recent fire. We are incredibly grateful for the generous donations from our faculty, students, and community members. It’s moments like these that remind us how special it is to come together and support a fellow Viking in need.

FBLA had a chance to visit Innovation Portal located in downtown Mobile. Members were able to learn about the services and resources available to individuals who would like to start a business and community members. They also visited the prototype lab and Dropout Bakery, a local small business connected to the building. Annabelle an employee at the Dropout Bakery is a current business major in the Pathway Program at Bishop State Community College spoke to the members about the program and its benefits which helps students transition from community college to four year universities. Thank you Innovation Portal and Annabelle for an informative visit. #makeyourmark #skolvikings #mcpss #alabamafbla #mgmfbla

Our MGM Textile Club spent the afternoon spreading holiday cheer at The City of Semmes Honor Park! 🎄✨
This tree is truly a labor of love. Our students knitted many of the ornaments by hand, crafted others from scratch, and even decorated repurposed and reused items to give them a new life. Their creativity and skills were on full display, and their tree tells a story of teamwork and imagination.
We had so much fun decorating, picnicking, and fellowshipping together—thanks to our favorite elf, Mr. Raiford, for bringing us dinner!
I’m so proud of their hard work, dedication, and their willingness to give back to our community in such a meaningful way. Watching them bring their ideas to life—and sharing that joy with others—was the highlight of my week.
If you’re in Honor Park, stop by and see their beautiful tree. It’s a shining example of what happens when students put heart, talent, and kindness into their work. ❤️🎄

Students in Ms. Miller’s Academy of Business Management class recently completed a Toy Box Leadership project. Each student in the class created a leadership lesson based on a classic toy and taught it to their classmates through lectures, games, and activities.

Students in our Academy at Faulkner Career and Technical Center have the opportunity to participate in a variety of programs—one of which is Aviation. Through this program, students gain hands-on training and earn industry-recognized credentials that help prepare them for future careers in advanced manufacturing.

Christmas Cookie Palooza is in full swing in our Academy of Hospitality and Tourism Culinary classes! Students selected a cookie recipe at random, created illustrated drawings to showcase the ingredients and steps, and then brought their creations to life in the kitchen. The results were absolutely delicious! #CTE

Mrs. Nease’s ceramics classes had the honor of hosting guest speakers Mrs. Patricia Silverman and Dr. Donald Berry this past week. Mrs. Silverman worked closely with Mobile’s Holocaust survivor, Agnes Tanenbaum, who spent many years visiting schools and organizations to share her powerful story. After Mrs. Tanenbaum’s passing, Mrs. Silverman continued this work through the Gulf Coast Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education.
Students from Ceramics, Art, Sociology, Theater, and History were among the first since COVID to hear this meaningful presentation, which connects to this year’s Art and Writing Competition theme: Partisans, Resistance, and Refugees.
This March, the Mobile Museum of Art will feature Resistance: The Wartime Photographs of Jewish Partisan Faye Schulman. All Viking students — especially those who attended the presentation — are encouraged to enter the writing or art/photography competitions inspired by Faye Schulman’s work and the legacy of Agnes Tanenbaum.

Our soccer team braved the cold to greet students from Allentown Elementary during High Five Friday! We love partnering with our local elementary schools and enjoy every chance to cheer on our future Vikings.
