During the months of January and February, a school nurse will screen all 9th grade students at MGM for spinal deformities. The purpose is to recognize, at the earliest stage, any deviation from normal so that the need for treatment can be determined. Spinal screening is required annually by law for schoolchildren in the state of Alabama for children in grades 5-9.
The procedure is a very simple one. The nurse will observe the child’s posture while standing and bending forward. It is suggested that girls wear a halter top or bra during screening, and that boys remove their shirts. If scoliosis or other spinal abnormalities are suspected, you will be notified by letter so that you may get further evaluation from your own physician.
If your child is receiving medical care for a spinal deformity from a physician, please contact the school nurse or send a letter stating that your child is under the care of a physician. All students will be screened unless a letter is received from the parent requesting an exemption or if the parent has opted out of school health screenings. Parent notes requesting exemption should be turned into the school nurse by January 13th.
